Just Jones &'s WeDidThis campaign finished on 23rd October 2011, successfully exceeding its £1500 target with 40 donations.
Our idea is to create an innovative approach to a classic. We’re looking for supporters who like their entertainment to offer challenges and ask difficult questions.
Just Jones & with the support of the Albany Theatre is working on an all new contemporary and international version of Ibsen’s masterpiece, An Enemy of the People. Our version explores how we choose our leaders and what we are really prepared to pay for our lifestyle. Relocated to a fictional town in the South West of England with voices and a soundscape from Indonesia, the play questions the individual’s responsibility to self, family and the community - locally and internationally. We examine the motivations of leaders and those who are destined or allow themselves to be led.
Peter Stockman, the Mayor, walks upright and proud after a life of public service. Quietly and sensibly he embodies the values of his community. His sister, Christina, a Doctor has lived a full life in the developing world, outspokenly opposing corruption in print and in person. Both draw the gaze when they enter a room. Together they have a vision of a family business - a health spa. The plan is blown apart by the discovery that their values are very different. For Christina, the business plan to create local employment and provide support for her family is no longer sustainable when she discovers it is built upon the use of exploitative labour and deforestation in the Indonesian Palm Oil trade. Peter insists that their responsibility is to their immediate locality. The production blends tragedy and domestic comedy with the added elements of verbatim and reportage. As audiences respond differently to the ideas, the second half of the play will be devised with alternative outcomes.
This first 3-day workshop will explore private and public relationships, give voice to the offstage presences in the UK and the Indonesian workers and corporate suppliers of Palm Oil; and crucially develop the interactive second half of the play which will see the audience’s responses influencing the final outcome at each performance.
We will involve our supporters as participants in workshop sharings, with updates and research questions. Please look at the rewards and we hope to see you at one of our events or online.
