Daedalus Theatre's WeDidThis campaign closed on 20th September 2011, having exceeded its funding goal of £1600 with 47 donations.
'A Place at the Table', the theatre piece at the heart of this project, is a powerful and thoughtful response to the ongoing troubles in Burundi, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It emerged from our work with experts, journalists and refugees and draws on eye-witness accounts and contemporary journalism.
Each audience member is invited to take a place literally within the performance at a large table alongside the performers to join an intimate and moving act of remembering and questioning. As witnesses give contradictory accounts of Burundi’s history, the table becomes many things: a UN conference table, cafe, kitchen and radio-presenter’s desk; soil is revealed and it becomes a mine, a grave, an archaeological dig and finally a place for new growth. Finally the audience are offered food and drink and invited to join the conversation. Their responses complete each performance and contribute to the total integration of workshop and interactive performance that we are in the process of developing for the company.
A pilot version of this innovative, immersive show was created and shown at Camden People’s Theatre in 2009. It will be updated and remounted at Camden People’s Theatre in Autumn 2011, followed by performances at Southwark Cathedral in January 2012, as the centre of a programme of workshops for local schools organised with the Cathedral's Education Centre. We also hope to tour to parts of the UK with significant black African populations.
