What is Growington?
Growington is a website that supports home growers, urban farmers, allotment owners, growing enthusiasts, and vertical and rooftop farmers in sharing, swapping and trading fruit and vegetables with those living nearby!
Well, that's kind of decent... what else?
On Growington.com you can/will be able to...
- See who, what and where food is being grown on a big map (similar to Landshare.) [live]
- Share your garden adventures through photos and blog posts on your own Grower's Log. [live]
- Share, swap and trade home grown food with other people in your neighbourhood. [in development]
- Snap a photo of a plant with your mobile phone, ask a question, and have a Growington community member help you out! [soon]
- Contribute to a crowd-sourced database of food growing knowledge. We’ll create the technology, you can share your knowledge to help each other! [soon]
- View food growing leader-boards based on how many people are growing food in different towns and cities across the country. [soon]
- Collect badges to collect based on what food you and your neighbours are growing. Try growing something unique to your area, and tell others about it! [soon]
If there’s one thing we want to achieve, it is helping you discover food that is growing in your neighbourhood. The more transparent we make this information, the more likely others will join in!
We might even help you meet a new neighbour. Please Pledge -------->
Food Growers Unite!
The current food industry is not sustainable for many reasons including population growth, climate change, an increase in the middle class demanding more global resources (India, China, South America), and fuel price rises. Oxfam predict food prices are set to double, and 2011 has seen the highest food prices on record, meaning more and more people are deciding to grow their own food.
We’re fast becoming educated on the benefits of local, organic, healthy, and sustainable food and it is time we did something about it ourselves because our government isn’t going to anytime soon.
Who are we?
We are Darren J Smith and John Blackbourn. Two delightful young gentlemen who like to design and build exciting online projects that lots of people can use! We have created Growington in our spare time over the last nine month period (whilst juggling jobs) and we’re proud to have got this far. However, if we really want to push forward with some of the upcoming features we need to dedicate significant time for the design and development.
We need your help to make it happen. Please help! :)
I can't afford to help, but I can give my time!
You rock almighty! Everyone can bring something, so how can you help? We’ve listed a few ideas below but this is by no means an exhaustive list.
1) Marketing and PR support to get the word out. Who do we need to talk to? What ideas do you have to spread the Growington love? How do we get more people on board?
2) We’re looking for a visual/graphic designer to help with the design of our website. It is currently very simple and clean, but we want it to be beautiful! Can you design our header, footer and style guide? Will it fit with our logo?
3) Calling passionate food and gardening bloggers - want to use Growington’s blog as a way to reach a new audience? We’re looking for writers to post interesting, thought-provoking or educational blog entries!
4) What else? What skills can you bring?
If you can’t pledge financially and can’t help with your time (but you’re still reading this), please spread the word by clicking all the social media buttons at the top of the page - Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Tumblr and Google+. You will be blessed with good fortune and a big smile :o)
