Desert by the MolinoGroup An Arts project from Exeter, Devon by the-molinogroup

We are a new theatre company raising money and galvanise support for a new piece of theatre entitled 'desert' inspired by the story of Pfc. Bradley Manning, the US Intelligence Analyst accused of leaking classified information to Wikileaks while serving in Iraq. Our aim is to create a great show that blends text, movement and media to intrigue and move audiences. Have a look at our rewards & thank you for your support!

We have 8 weeks to raise £800 for desert ...

What the project is

desert tells a story that ask questions about the reach and responsibility of an individual's actions in international conflicts and the differing ways these can be portrayed in the public arena.

Blurring between real and imagined events in a kaleidoscopic exploration of this important contemporary figure, desert probes how far the campaign phrase ‘We are all Bradley Manning’ really goes.

Who's behind it

the MolinoGroup is a new theatre & performance collective set up in 2011. Working with an acting ensemble in a collaborative way, the company develops new writing from a different angle, workshopping text alongside a more physical approach. In doing so we aim to bridge the gap between new writing and devising practices.

Why we need the money

We need your financial support because:

a) We feel this is a hugely important story that doesn't have as much coverage as it should in the UK -- and theatre is a good way of looking at it afresh;

b) As we are a new company we do not have any Arts Council funding;

c) We are fundraising for two very specific things which we could not otherwise afford, both of which are crucial to making the story as engaging as it can be for our audiences; they are: (i) the week-long hire of the technical equipment and expertise required for the show's multimedia elements (film and video projection); (ii) the hire of a Movement Director; desert only involves two performers, which means that the physical demands on them to present the world surrounding Bradley Manning and his alleged 'leak' is enormous; a Movement Director is crucial for us to achieve the distinct visual language we want for the play.

What we hope to do in future

Make more theatre!

But in the immediate: after its run at the Bike Shed Theatre Exeter, we are planning to tour desert in 2013. We hope this is only the start of a long journey!
